I just finished my lunch break and I am now writing a blog entry. That should indicate how slow today has been. In actuality, the day has been even slower.
Work hasn’t been pretty good up until today. Been working on some database merging and such, which has essentially stalled today for a couple of reasons. I thought that the task I had today would take at least a majority of the pre-lunch hours, but since I had to deal with a much smaller data set than initially anticipated, it took about 30 minutes. And I have only been getting work in small increments, so that when my higher-up is unavailable, things like this result. There is another project he mentioned to me; when he get’s back, I’ll see if I can start on that.
Saw the Laker game with a bunch of friends, many of whom I hadn’t seen since winter break or last summer. The evening also entailed some poker playing. Despite being in the completely wrong mindset to play cards, luck took me to riches instead of rags.
I finished Rubin’s book finally. I say finally not because it was in anyway bad. It was a very interesting, informative, and comprehensive read. On the other hand, I have been anxious to start other books. I’m debating between Cryptonomicon (a 900+ page tomb) or The Palace Thief (a set of four short stories). It comes down to when I want some instant gratification. I’m leaning towards reading The Palace Thief during lunch breaks and starting Cryptonomicon on the weekend. We’ll see how that pans out.
I also want to read Chernow’s book on Hamilton. But there’s no way that can be added without removing something from the list. Since Clinton’s book has yet to be purchased (since it’s not out yet), I’m tempted to swap the two. But nothing is compelling me to buy either book immediately, so it will most likely be a decision for later.
I don’t get Friday off, but I am supposed to get a day off later in lieu of Friday. If they let me, I might take it around the same time as Independence Day and get a nice four-day weekend out of it.
That’s all I got for now. At this rate, it’s going to take some creativity to keep my sanity through the rest of the day.
